SEOUL, NORTH KOREA (GaeaTimes.com)- On Wednesday the former President of United States Jimmy Carter arrived in North Korea to convince the authorities for the release of an American citizen jailed in North Korea on charges of illegally entering the state. During the tour, Jimmy Cater reportedly aims to win a release for Aijalon Mahli Gomes who has been serving an eight years hard labor imprisonment sentence since early this year. This is his second trip of the former President to North Korea and this time he has been reportedly accompanied by his wife. Although some analyst of North Korea have voiced that Jimmy Carter during his stay will perhaps try to break the ice between United States and North Korea, the Washington officials have described the visit as a private humanitarian mission taken by the former president.
The officials in Washington have strictly held that the present tour is a private one undertaken by Jimmy Carter to help the case of Aijalon Mahli Gomes. Aijalon Mahli Gomes, a Boston citizen, was sentenced in April to eight years of hard labor along with a fine of $700,000 for illegally entering North Korea. However, many have voiced that the above mentioned is not the only purpose of Jimmy Carter’s visit.
As per reports, the former President of United States Jimmy Carter was received at the Pyongyang airport by Kim Kye-gwan, who is a senior North Korean diplomat. Mr. Kim Kye-gwan as per media sources is the key envoy to the six-nation talks on the ending of the state’s nuclear weapons program. Many think that the present visit will help to mobilize the talk process that has been stalled for more than two years.
