The news that former President Jimmy Carter’s talks with the North Korean government has yielded results and that he has departed from Pyongyang along with the detained American national, has been confirmed by his office.

Aijalon Mahli Gomes was taken into custody by the authorities in North Korea after he was accused of illegally crossing the borders of the country and a ‘hostile act’, the specific details of which has not been released. In the wake of the charges levied against him, the American citizen was given a sentence of eight years in hard labor and a had to pay a fine of $600,000. The development that former President Jimmy Carter would be returning to the U.S. soil soon with the detained American national has been welcomed by the U.S. State Department in a statement that has been issued by it.

In the statement P.J. Crowley, a spokesperson of the State Department has expressed relief that the American citizen would now be reunited with his family while appreciating the humanitarian effort of former President Jimmy Carter. Moreover, the State Department spokesperson also went on to add that given the fact that there are no diplomatic relations between U.S and North Korea, venturing into the country is neither risk-free nor routine.
