Gibbs: Democrats will keep the House in November
WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Robert Gibbs says he thinks Democrats will hang onto control of the House in November.
The spokesman’s comment, in his briefing with reporters on Tuesday, is significant given the context of what he said during a news program on Sunday. Gibbs had told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that there is “no doubt” that there are enough House seats in play to give Republicans a chance to seize control.
That comment caused grumbling among Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill.
On Tuesday, Gibbs said the choices that will be presented to voters in November “are clearer by the day” and that Democrats will be able to make a strong case on how they have improved people’s lives. “I think we’ll retain the House,” Gibbs said. “I was asked if there were enough seats in play, and I think there are.”
