Germany to host financial regulation summit May 20
BERLIN — Germany says it will host an international conference on May 20 to discuss regulatory and supervisory reform of financial markets.
The Finance Ministry said Thursday that participants will include German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde and OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria.
The ministry said “high-level participation” from the International Monetary Fund is envisioned and Canada, which holds the Group of Eight’s presidency, will be represented in Berlin by a deputy finance minister, Tiff Macklem.
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has said he wants to keep up momentum in international efforts to strengthen regulation.
Germany plans a bank levy to finance a fund to defuse future crises, an idea backed by France.
