UK police officer won’t be charged in G-20 death

LONDON — Britain’s chief prosecutor says a police officer filmed knocking down a man who later died during a protest at London’s Group of 20 summit won’t face charges.

Director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer said Thursday he had concluded there was “no realistic prospect” of a conviction.

Newspaper vendor Ian Tomlinson died from internal bleeding after being hit by a baton, bitten by a police dog and pushed to the ground by a police officer during protests at the 2009 G-20 summit. Tomlinson’s fall was caught on video.

the 47-year-old Tomlinson was not a protester but was caught up in the demonstration while walking home from work.

Starmer said prosecutors could not prove beyond reasonable doubt a link between the alleged assault on Tomlinson and his death.
