WASHINGTON (GaeaTimes.com)- Wilder Publications, a small publishing company has been heavily criticized by the American public for putting a warning label of important historical documents that include the Constitution and Declaration Of Independence. The disclaimer says that since the documents were written more than a hundred years ago, they are different in terms of values that are prevalent today. It also says that the parents should discuss the changes that have taken place in society in terms of race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity and interpersonal relations before the youngsters start reading them.
The buyers of the book and other people who came across the disclaimer by Wilder Publications on the historical documents have called it sickly, insulting and horrifying. According to constitutional attorney Noel Francisco, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are the founding documents of the nation. He adds that they are legally operative documents and putting a disclaimer on the makes them look like a liability. The publication also saw bad reviews and also calls for complete boycott by some people. The online book store that sold the book received buyers’ feedback that asked people to not buy from the publication.
Putting a disclaimer usually protects a document from being legally attacked. In this case the documents that are question forms the law itself and therefore the disclaimer is of no legal value either according to Noel Francisco. He feels that the Wilder Publications is trying to make something as important as these documents controversial when they are not. The controversy might sell a few books quickly at the moment but in the long run it wouldn’t be beneficial for the credibility of the documents.
