BAGHDAD (GaeaTimes.com) — Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki said on Monday that two top insurgent leaders had been assassinated, this included a person who reportedly operated under the name Abu Omar al-Baghdadi.
Baghdadi’s existence is to some extent mythical as because he has been reported dead and detained for quite a few times earlier also. Now, one thing can be said about this, multiple persons may have been operating by the same name framing a chaotic situation.
But, this time the news has been officiated by the prime minister himself and then supported by the U.S. troops who confirmed that the raid took place in the dark hours of Sunday morning near Tikrit, near Saddam Hussein’s hometown. The other person to have been killed due this operation was Abu Ayyub al-Masri, the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, also known as Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, a largely Iraqi group that includes some foreign leadership.
According to PM Nuri Kamal al-Maliki,
The security forces surrounded the hole, and when they got them out they were dead.
When questioned, Gen. Ray Odierno, the top American military commander in Iraq, stated,
The death of these terrorists is potentially the most significant blow to Al Qaeda in Iraq since the beginning of the insurgency, The Government of Iraq intelligence services and security forces supported by U.S. intelligence and special operations forces have over the last several months continued to degrade A.Q.I. There is still work to do but this is a significant step forward in ridding Iraq of terrorists.
