ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 8, 2010) –Governor Martin O’Malley issued this statement today on the compromise reached between the White House and Congressional leaders:
As Governor of Maryland, I support President Obama in the difficult compromise reached for the sake of millions of unemployed Americans.
The President understandably felt a responsibility to protect millions of families who were about to have their life-line cut-off by House Republicans in their blind zeal to secure ever deeper and longer lasting tax cuts for millionaires.
While this deal is not perfect, the President has clearly demonstrated his commitment to millions of families who continue to be hard-hit by the on-going effects of the Bush recession during this holiday season.
It is a sad day for the once proud Party of Lincoln when the Republican Leaders in Congress would put the short-term financial interests of millionaires ahead of the immediate needs of unemployed American families, and the long-term fiscal health of our nation.
