Sheikh Abdullah hailed on 28th death anniversary

SRINAGAR - Tributes were paid here Wednesday to Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the founder of the ruling National Conference on his 28th death anniversary.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah, the union minister for new and renewable energy, Wednesday visited the mausoleum of the Sheikh on the banks of Dal Lake and offered prayers there.

Prayers were also offered at the grave of Begum Akbar Jahan, the Sheikh’s wife who is buried alongside the veteran Kashmiri politician.

The father and son highlighted the sacrifices made by the National Conference founder to uplift the people of the state during the rule of kings in Kashmir.

The senior Abdullah released a book on the occasion.

Ministers, legislators and National Conference activists also paid tributes to the late Sheikh.

Extensive security arrangements were made for the function and entry into the mausoleum complex was strictly regulated.

When the Sheikh passed away this day in 1982, around half a million mourners had formed his funeral procession which was also attended by the president and prime minister of India.
