Ivory Coast opposition names 11 ministers to gov’t

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — Ivory Coast’s opposition has named 11 ministers to the country’s new unity government after watching the Cabinet meet without them last week.

The new government, announced Thursday, is made up of 16 ministers drawn from President Laurent Gbagbo’s FPI party and the former New Forces rebels as well as 11 ministers representing opposition parties.

When the government met for its first Cabinet meeting last Friday, the opposition was absent as the names of new ministers couldn’t be agreed upon.

The new government is largely made up of the same presidential and rebel ministers as the last one, but the opposition team has been almost entirely replaced.

Gbagbo dissolved the government and the electoral commission on Feb. 12, sparking two weeks of violent protests. He then announced this new unity government.
