JERUSALEM - US senator John Kerry voiced support for sanctions against Iran’s energy industry after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Monday in Jerusalem.

Kerry said he was “absolutely” in favour of sanctions against Iran, noting that “the most biting and important sanctions would be those on the energy side”, the Jerusalem Post reported online.

Israeli President Shimon Peres had previously asked Kerry, chairman of the US Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, to tighten economic sanctions against Iran.

Kerry said that the US and Israel have intensified contacts to be “on the same page” about options available to stop the advance of Teheran’s nuclear programme.
