NEW DELHI - Amid growing Chinese influence in Myanmar, India Wednesday said its policy towards Yangon was independent of any third country.

“India’s policy vis-a-vis Myanmar is independent of third country’s involvement in Myanmar, Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur told the Lok Sabha.

She was asked if New Delhi had reviewed its policy in the wake of China’s expanding shadow over Myanmar.

India’s policy towards Myanmar was one of constructive engagement based on enhanced bilateral and development cooperation, she said.

India hosted Myanmar’s General Than Shwe on a five-day state visit in July. India has advocated reconciliation and reforms in Myanmar and has been opposed to Western sanctions against the country.
