AP Exclusive: Calif lawmakers fail to report gifts
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Greens fees and spa treatments at a Pebble Beach resort. Tickets to Disneyland and Keith Urban concerts. Prime seats to a college football bowl game.
Those are some of the freebies California lawmakers received from lobbyists in 2008 that they apparently failed to report to state regulators, as required by law.
Documents obtained by The Associated Press through the public records act show 38 current members of the Assembly and Senate did not report meals, travel, sporting events and other perks. That’s nearly one of every three lawmakers.
The California Fair Political Practices Commission has sent warning letters to the lawmakers.
Failure to disclose such gifts can bring fines of up to $5,000 for each violation.
