Neb. gov calls for pay freeze next fiscal year

LINCOLN, Neb. — About 220 directors and managers in Nebraska state government won’t be getting pay increases next fiscal year, which begins in July.

Gov. Dave Heineman on Tuesday announced the pay freeze and urged other state directors and members of some state agencies, boards and commissions that don’t report directly to the governor to also freeze pay.

Heineman says that in challenging economic times it’s important to lead by example.

It was not immediately known how much the move might save the state.

Top managers were scheduled to get a 2.5 percent pay increase in July. Directors hadn’t been notified of a pay increase.

The state’s top six elected officials, including Heineman, have already announced that they didn’t want pay raises for four years.
