US soldiers, families face cuts in base services

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — Soldiers and their families are facing broad cuts in services on bases as the Army tries to hold down non-war spending while ramping up the fight in Afghanistan.

Funding for Army post operations is expected to drop 20 percent overall this year and up to 40 percent at some major installations, according to figures provided to The Associated Press.

The overall cuts are not finalized and were provided to the AP by an Army official who requested anonymity because he isn’t authorized to speak about them.

Fort Campbell on the Kentucky-Tennessee line may cut back on janitorial service, lawn mowing and recreation center hours. But post spokeswoman Kelly Tyler says that may not be enough to meet a 40-percent cut for their location.
