India looking to being responsible UNSC member: President Patil

NEW DELHI - India is looking forward to fulfilling its responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, President Pratibha Patil said here Wednesday.

At a ceremony to receive credentials from eight new envoys, Patil said that India was looking foward to working with the international community to fullfill its obligations as a responsible member of the Security Council.

India will begin its two-year tenure Jan 1, 2011.

Patil added that India had all the credentials to be a permanent member in an expanded and reformed UN Security Council.

She received credentials from the envoys of Canada, Estonia, Gambia, Libya, Namibia, San Marino, Ukraine and Yemen.

Patil emphasized the need for all countries to work together to defeat terrorism which poses the greatest threat to progress and prosperity.
