WASHINGTON (GaeaTimes.com)- After months of skirting the issue of the construction of a mosque and a Muslim community center near the ground zero of the World Trade Center, the President of United States Barack Obama has ultimately voiced his thoughts over the issue. During last Friday’s White House gathering to observe the Islamic Holy month of Ramadan, President Barack Obama maintained that Muslims in American have every constitutional right to build a place of worship and a community center in a private property. The comments by President Barack Obama on the mosque in the New York City has however turned the local issue into a national one and has also led the President to backtrack his statement. Republicans have already criticized the comments of the President and public polls conducted by different agencies show that two-third of the Americans reportedly oppose the construction of the mosque.
President Barack Obama on Friday said that as a citizen and as a President of United States he believes that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in United States. “This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable” the President upheld. However, on Saturday, as people from different sectors came up with comments over the statement made by the president over the construction of the mosque, President Barack Obama reviewed his statement and insisted in front of the media sources that he had not meant to indicate that he supported the construction of the building in anyway, but that he was only trying to make a legal point.
President Barack Obama held that he was not commenting and will not comment on the “wisdom” of making the decision on the construction of the mosque on the proposed property. He mentioned that he was commenting on the basic right that people have and which dates back to the founding years of United States.
