THIMPHU - Pakistan Wednesday said it had proposed talks between Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the 16th SAARC summit here but New Delhi did not respond.

“This meeting was part of our roadmap which was given to India in New York by Foreign Minister (Shah Mehmood Qureshi) to his Indian counterpart (S.M. Krishna)… then again by our foreign secretary (Salman Bashir) to Nirupama Rao Feb 25 in New Delhi. But unfortunately India did not respond to that roadmap,” Pakistan foreign office spokesperson Abdul Basit told reporters here.

Heads of eight South Asian countries, including Manmohan Singh and Gilani, are in Thimphu for the 16th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) conference.

Basit said that the two countries realise that there has to be a “meaningful and constructive dialogue”.

“If they meet, our prime minister’s efforts will be to start such an engagement, so that all issues of terrorism and others are solved.”
