SALT LAKE CITY — Eleven workers who were exposed to an irritating material at a Utah National Guard training base on Thursday had to be decontaminated in a hospital parking lot before they were taken to the emergency room and released several hours later.
The irritant came from material leaking from a building’s heating system that was dripping onto some drywall, according to Maj. Craig Bello of the 85th Civil Support Team.
Seven of the workers were in an office building at Camp Williams about 25 miles south of Salt Lake City Thursday morning when they started to suffer itchy eyes, scratchy throats and runny noses.
They drove themselves to a hospital in Riverton and called the emergency room en route to explain their symptoms. They were told to stay in their vehicles until hazardous materials crews arrived.
Four other workers who were in the building but not exhibiting symptoms also went to the hospital as a precaution.
All eleven were decontaminated — a process that involves stripping down and getting a full-body wash in a special trailer — and then taken into the hospital, according to Capt. Clint Smith, a Unified Fire Authority spokesman.
They were evaluated in the emergency room, held for observation and then released.
“They’re all doing fine,” said hospital spokesman Jess Gomez.
The workers were a mix of civilians and National Guard members, according to Lt. Col. Hank McIntire, a Utah National Guard spokesman.
They were working in a building known as the Utah Center for Domestic Preparedness Training Facility. It is undergoing minor renovations that mostly involve upgrading technological equipment, McIntire said.
The 85th Civil Support Team, the Utah National Guard’s hazardous materials response unit, investigated the incident. The combination of the “weak acid” from the leak in the heating system and the calcium carbonate in the wallboard created an airborne irritant, Bello said.

Lindsey Graham, much of our Southern fence, E-Verify, 287 (G) are at risk. This is the lead-up to force through an ultimate Immigration Reform Act, Which is better named as AMNESTY, that will de-criminalize somewhere between 20 and 30 million illegal aliens who have entered this country. IT WOULD COST MILLIONS OF DOLLARS LESS, TO REVISE THE 1986 SIMPSON/ MAZZOLI BILL WITH AMENDMENTS, THAN CONFRONTING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHICH SUCH ANOTHER TRAVESTY. Once here hundreds of thousands will be financially deserted, leaving the taxpayers as the burdened beneficiary. Nor does the payout end up there, as millions more are waiting in expectation to climb the fence or slip through airport terminals. For instance they could make E-Verify permanent, including 287G. Next a Guest worker program for the harvesting of fruits and vegetable, but with a limited permit to work in that particular enterprise, with the understanding of returning to their home country after expiring. Next promote special visa for high caliber workforce of technical engineers, scientists and personnel who have special abilities as an interest in our nations future. Outside of these two recipients we do not need or require people who are here to either work menial jobs, or looking for a better life. We have our own population of every nationality who entered this country by following the rules. We certainly don’t need the flotsam and jetsam of criminals, that we have imported through the wide gapped open fence areas.
