SAfrica president’s no confidence vote thrown out

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — South Africa’s ruling party says it used its overwhelming majority in the nation’s parliament to throw out a no confidence vote in President Jacob Zuma.

The African National Congress says the opposition’s no confidence motion was frivolous and baseless and the parliament reaffirmed its full confidence in Zuma on Thursday.

Supporters of the motion say Zuma, who has three wives, recently acknowledged fathering an illegitimate child and his behavior set a poor example, particularly in the fight against HIV/Aids.

Earlier this month, the South African leader was also accused of withholding details of his personal assets that, when eventually released, included pajamas given to him by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
