French official: Man found alive in shop rubble

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — A French official says a 23-year-old man has been found alive and in good condition beneath the rubble of a fruit and vegetable shop in Haiti, 11 days after an earthquake crumbled the capital city.

French Civil Protection Lt. Col. Christophe Renou tells The Associated Press that the man is still in the debris, but rescuers have tunneled a hole to get him water.

Renou says a doctor examined the man and reported he was in good health Saturday.

Rescues have become increasingly rare since the magnitude-7.0 quake leveled the city Jan. 12, killing an estimated 200,000 people.

Earlier Saturday, the United Nations announced an end to rescue operations. Still, dozens of teams continue to pick through the rubble.
