Democrat Coakley says she will continue MLK’s work
BOSTON — Democrat Martha Coakley is asking Massachusetts voters to send her to the U.S. Senate to continue the type of work that filled the life of Martin Luther King Jr.
Speaking at a King birthday breakfast, Coakley said Monday that “if Dr. King were here today, he’s be standing with us.” She says he’d especially want the country to pass President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul.
Her Republican rival in the neck-and-neck race, Scott Brown, was also attending the event but wasn’t on the speaking program.
Both candidates are vying to succeed the late Sen. Edward Kennedy. At stake is a pivotal Senate vote Democrats hope to use to pass President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul. The GOP hopes to pick up a 41st vote to the block the president’s agenda this midterm election year.
Independent candidate Joseph L. Kennedy is also on Tuesday’s ballot, but he has done little public campaigning.
