Army: Ugandan rebel group acting commander killed

KAMPALA, Uganda — A Ugandan army spokesman says that a notorious rebel commander has been killed in Central African Republic.

Brigadier Bok Abudema was an acting commander for the Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel group known for cutting the lips off its victims, abducting child soldiers and turning girls into sex slaves.

Northern Uganda army spokesman, Capt. Ronald Kakurungo, said Saturday that Abudema had been killed by Ugandan forces on Friday.

Ugandan army spokesman, Lt. Col. Felix Kulaigye, called Abudema’s killing a “New Year’s gift to Uganda.”

The Lord’s Resistance Army has been waging an insurgency in northern Uganda for more than 20 years. In recent years, the group has tried to hide in other countries.
