WASHINGTON - US President Barack Obama will Friday privately meet with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, who is visiting America for the funeral of former US ambassador Richard Holbrooke.

Obama will welcome Zardari to the White House, spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters Thursday.

The leaders planned to discuss efforts to combat terrorism and build up Pakistan’s economy and democracy.

Holbrooke, a veteran US diplomat and Obama’s special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, died in December at the age of 69.

Obama and Zardari will be among a number of dignitaries to attend the memorial service for Holbrooke Friday.
