KARACHI - Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has thrown his weight behind beleaguered Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani against any attempt to destabilise the coalition government.

Zardari called Gilani on Monday and discussed the ongoing political situation, and assured him of full support of the party.

“Zardari has full confidence in the PM and solidly stands behind him in foiling any attempt to destabilise the coalition government,” the Daily Times quoted the president’s spokesman, Farhatullah Babar, as saying in a statement.

According to the ststement, while reposing full confidence in Gilani’s ability as Leader of the House, Zardari also expressed firm hope that the PM would complete his five year term, the manipulations against him notwithstanding.

He also debunked reports in a section of the media that sought to portray that the premier was fighting a lonely battle.

“The Prime Minister is not alone; he will not be left alone,” the minister said, adding, “The party stands behind him through thick and thin. Let there be no doubt on the matter.”

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Rehman Malik termed the Muttaheda Qaumi Movement’s decision to quit the ruling coalition as ‘no big step’ at all for the government, adding that little turmoil was part of politics.

Talking to media persons outside the Bilawal House, he said that talks with the MQM were underway.

“The PPP and MQM were two separate political forces working on their own agendas,” said Malik, adding that the government would complete its tenure and that the PPP had full confidence in Gilani. (ANI)
