Obama, Japanese PM meet for first time
TORONTO — Meeting for the first time, President Barack Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan discussed issues ranging from North Korea to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
Obama said the international community must stand behind South Korea and send a clear signal to North Korea that its provocative behavior is unacceptable.
North Korea is blamed for the deadly sinking of a South Korean warship.
Obama said he also thanked Kan for the offer of booms and skimmers to help clean up the Gulf spill.
Obama is scheduled to attend an economic summit in Japan this year. Kan said he’d make sure to have plenty of “matcha” — green tea ice cream — on hand. It’s Obama’s favorite.
The two leaders met at the G-20 economic summit in Toronto.
