New York (GaeaTimes.com) President Barack Obama’s first Oval Office address on Tuesday night indicated new urgency to the Gulf Oil Spill and he accused BP of their recklessness in the incident. Obama swore not to rest until the company has paid for the damages that have been caused to the lives, business and the shorelines. His tone of address was unyielding towards BP and the language was military. He called his efforts,

battle we’re waging against an oil spill that is assaulting our shores and our citizens.

Obama continued with his military tone,

Make no mistake: We will fight this spill with everything we’ve got for as long it takes

About the resources to guarantee the Gulf Coast recovers, he said,

We will make BP pay for the damage their company has caused. And we will do whatever’s necessary to help the Gulf Coast and its people recover from this tragedy.

Obama announced a BP financed compensation fund but he did not clear any more details regarding the matter. Robert Gibbs, White House spokesman described the speech as an inflection point when the initial response is replaced by more decisive action. In his speech he said that 90% of the spill will be capped within weeks, 17,000 National Guard members will be authorized to help and about 5.5 million feet of boom will be laid in the water. Obama said that the spill is more like an epidemic than an earthquake. He indicated it to be a problem rather than a single event and we need to fight against it for months and even for years.

It should not only be a military assertion but it must be translated into action. Such urgency must have an efficient output! The oil spill problem will not last long if there is an immediate response to the situation. Spending vacation near the oil spill area as planned by the first family is nothing but inaction on the part of the administration.
