PARIS - Africa should be represented at the UN Security Council, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Monday.

“We have to clear up the space for Africa that it deserves, which is not the case today,” said Sarkozy during a French-African summit in Nice.

“It is not normal, that Africa has no regular member of the UN Security Council,” he added - without suggesting which African nation should take such a seat.

Currently, only the US, Russia, France, Britain and China hold permanent seats on the body. Each also can veto resolutions presented to the council.

Heads of state from 38 African nations are participating in the summit.
