Turkey says nuclear deal with Iran chance at peace

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey is defending its attempt to resolve the nuclear standoff between Iran and Western powers led by the U.S.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s office says he told President Barack Obama that the deal brokered by Turkey and Brazil can end the conflict by having Iran ship much of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey.

It quotes Erdogan as telling Obama in the letter sent Friday that the deal “has opened the door for a diplomatic solution.” The deal failed to ease concerns in the West which fears that Tehran will continue to enrich uranium to higher levels.

The U.S. introduced a resolution this week calling for a series of economic and trade restrictions, after winning support from China and Russia.

Erdogan’s office said the letter also gives details of the uranium deal.
