Nigeria’s oil region ex-governor freed on bail

ABUJA, Nigeria — A spokesman for the former governor of Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta state says he was freed on bail after being arrested in Dubai for corruption charges.

Tony Eluemunor says James Ibori was granted bail Thursday and remains in Dubai according to bail terms.

Ibori was arrested Wednesday. Nigerian anti-graft agency chief Farida Waziri said the former governor was wanted on charges of stealing 44 billion naira ($292 million) in state funds while he was in office in the West African country.

Eluemunor said in a press release that Ibori was arrested on a UK warrant, which he said failed to give details of the accused crimes.

Nigeria’s government, fueled by oil revenues, is considered by analysts to be one of the world’s most corrupt.
