GENEVA - US and Russian officials resumed their talks on nuclear disarmament in Geneva Monday, according to a US official.

Although various negotiating teams have been at work on the topic over recent months, Monday’s meeting marks the resumption of work by the full negotiating teams, which include defence and space officials.

The goal is to create a successor to the START I (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) weapons reduction treaty, which expired in December.

“We hope that the remaining negotiations can be concluded quickly,” said a US diplomat. However, he could not name a timeline for concluding the talks or renewing the treaty.
