NJ city program to offer prescription drugs for $2

NEWARK, N.J. — Newark officials are launching a program to offer residents generic versions of more than 300 medications for just $2 a prescription.

With funding from the Heinz Family philanthropic foundation and support from the Newark-based Liss Pharmacy, customers can get a 30-day supply of commonly prescribed medications from blood thinners to diabetes medications.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker says the program is open to both insured and uninsured residents. He says Newark’s percentage of residents without health insurance is higher than the state average, which is about one-third of the population.

The program expands earlier efforts to provide free health care services to residents in Newark during the economic downturn.

The “Brick City Respite” program will run through the end of February.
