ISLAMABAD - Condemning the assassination of Pakistan Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said the culprits would be brought to justice.

Gilani also called on workers and supporters of his Pakistan People’s Party “to remain calm” to allow a proper investigation.

“The Prime Minister has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident and submission of a report at the earliest. The culprits involved in the assassination, he said, would be brought to justice,” the Daily Times quoted a statement released from Gilani’s office, as saying.

Gilani expressed “deep grief and sorrow” over the murder, the statement added.

Taseer was shot dead by one of his guards on Tuesday in Islamabad.

He was a successful businessman and publisher of a liberal English-language daily newspaper. He had also opposed religious parties and the extremism they spread.

The killing is now a grim reminder of the risks that Pakistani leaders take to oppose religious extremists. (ANI)
