NEW DELHI - Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) General Secretary Vijay Goel on Monday demanded that the illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, who are presently living in Assam should be removed from the voters list.
After submitting a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner Shahabuddin Yaqoob Quraishi, Goel said: “Bangladeshis illegally entered India, especially into the northeast region, and in Assam about hundreds of Bangladeshis have resided there. They have enrolled themselves in the voters list as well.”
“The whole demography of Assam has changed, Assam’s autonomy is in danger and I understand that this is constitutional breakdown where through ballot foreigners want to rule a part of our country,” he added.
Vijay Goel further demanded Indian citizenship for the Bengalis, who have left Bangladesh.
“There are a lot of Bengalis, who have left Bangladesh because of torture. They should be given Indian citizenship and doubtful voters, who are troubling Hindu Bengalis should end. As of now, about 90 percent are not Bangladesh Muslims, but are Hindu Bengalis who are from Assam or those who have come into India,” he said.
Goel said that the Election Commission has assured the BJP leaders of sending an officer to Assam to take stock of the situation.
Meanwhile, Pilbhit MP Varun Gandhi, who is the BJP’s election in-charge for Assam after meeting the Chief Election Commissioner over the issue said that illegal immigrants is one prominent issue, but other issues that the party is targeting are eradication of corruption in all its forms.
“Corruption is one of the major concern, a 1000 crore scam in North Cachar Hills is also a major issue and the way inflation has been increasing, it is also one of the biggest issues for the whole country. Bharatiya Janata party is fighting the polls and will execute a positive attitude while participating in the polls,” said Gandhi.
“We are going to fight for all 126 seats and we believe that there will be a good result,” he claimed.
Elections in Assam are expected some time in March-April. (ANI)
