NEW DELHI - President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday led the nation in paying homage to late prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 26th death anniversary.

Besides President Patil, the function at Indira Gandhi Memorial Museum located at the late prime minister’s Safdarjung Road residence was attended by Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Noted classical singer Vidya Dhar rendered devotional songs during the programme that lasted an hour.

The leaders visited Shakti Sthal to pay their homage to the late prime minister prior to the function at Safdarjung Road.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated Oct 31, 1984 by two of her Sikh bodyguards in the Indian capital. In the ensuing riots, thousands of people, mostly Sikhs, were killed across the country.
