HYDERABAD - Legislators of the ruling Congress in Andhra Pradesh Wednesday night unanimously authorised party chief Sonia Gandhi to name the successor to chief minister K. Rosaiah, who resigned on health grounds earlier in the day.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting, which was also attended by four central observers of the party, unanimously passed a resolution authorising Sonia to name the new leader.

Senior party leader and Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters after the meeting that they would communicate the CLP’s decision to Sonia Gandhi.

“Her decision will be communicated to you at an appropriate time,” he said.

The brief meeting, which lasted for 15 minutes, also passed another resolution placing on record the services of Rosaiah as chief minister.

Mukherjee said there was no other issue discussed at the meeting, which was attended by almost all 156 members of assembly of the party.

Senior leaders and central ministers A.K. Antony, M. Veerappa Moily and Ghulam Nabi Azad were also present as observers.

Mukherjee read out a message from Sonia Gandhi, stressing the need for unity to strengthen the party.

Rosaiah, state Congress chief D. Srinivas and members of legislative council of Congress party also attended the meet.
