CHANDIGARH - Former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh’s return as the state Congress chief Tuesday sent a streak of happiness among the party workers.

Euphoric party workers took to streets and celebrated by bursting crackers and distributing sweets.

Amarinder Singh replaced Mohinder Singh Kaypee. He was named the state chief by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who had been authorised by the state party units to choose their heads.

Amarinder Singh is an able leader and he knows how to take along people from all sections of the society. We are very happy over this decision as it has put in new energy and motivation in the party workers, Gursatjit Deol, a party worker from Patiala, hometown of Amarinder, told IANS.

Harmanjit Singh, another staunch fan of Amarinder and the Congress party, said: We are bursting crackers and have distributed sweets in the whole market. This decision has come at a very right time as Punjab Congress desperately needed someone like Amarinder Singh to unite the gradually disintegrating units.

Amarinder Singh’s appointment has come at very crucial time as Punjab is heading towards the state assembly elections that are due early 2012.

He himself was very enthusiastic and upbeat over his appointment.

I would try my level best to keep the faith of the Congress president. I am ready to do a lot of hard work for the party’s welfare in the coming days. I always believe in taking people along with the mainstream, said Amarinder.
