LUCKNOW - Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh Monday urged party leaders and activists to fan out across Uttar Pradesh and prepare the people to observe peace and communal harmony after the Ayodhya verdict is out Sep 24.

“Whatever be the judgement in the long-pending Ramjanmbhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, Congress workers are being advised to counsel common people not to allow anything to cause any kind of communal divide between people,” he said at a press conference here.

“They ought to spread the word that the Ayodhya case is not a Hindu or Muslim issue,” he said.

“We have asked all members of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee to reach out to people in their respective areas and tell them to observe calm and peace and not allow mischief mongers to misguide or provoke them,” Digvijay Singh added.

On the election of the state unit chief, he said the party leaders have unanimously resolved to authorise Congress president Sonia Gandhi to nominate the state chief, and other office bearers as well members of the state executive.

Both key contenders - Rita Bahuguna Joshi, the present state chief as well as Pramod Tiwari, the chief of Congress Legislature Party CLP) - have said they had “full faith” in Sonia Gandhi, who would be free to name the next state party president and other functionaries.
