5 people killed in shelling in Somalia’s capital

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A medical official in Somalia says five people were killed in shelling in rebel-controlled parts of the capital.

Mogadishu ambulance service chief Ali Muse said Sunday 10 people were wounded and taken to hospitals after shelling rocked the capital late Saturday. He says most of the dead were civilians.

News of the shelling came as African heads of states discussed the conflict in Somalia at an African Union summit in Uganda. The focus of the summit shifted to Somalia after 76 people were killed two weeks ago in twin bombings in Uganda. Somalia’s top militant group, al-Shabab, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Islamic insurgents control much of Mogadishu and have been trying to topple the fragile government for three years.
