SC police: Candidate won’t be charged over fee
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina state police say U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene will face no state charges over his $10,440 filing fee in the Democratic primary.
A spokeswoman also told The Associated Press on Friday that the State Law Enforcement Division will not charge the unemployed veteran with misrepresenting his finances to a court.
Greene won an unexpected victory over a former state lawmaker in the June 8 Democratic primary to face GOP U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.
Greene also faces a pending obscenity charge. A public defender had been appointed to represent him.
His meager finances raised questions about how he paid the $10,440 fee to run for Senate. Greene has said he saved up his military pay for two years. On Friday, he told AP the result vindicated him.
