Fiorina courts Latino voters but key supporter differs with her on immigration policy

Fiorina courts Latinos in California Senate race

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Republican Senate candidate Carly Fiorina is making a new pitch to Latino voters with a Spanish-language website.

But her chief supporter at a Saturday launch, former U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, has sharply differing views from Fiorina on immigration.

Fiorina supports Arizona’s immigration law, which Gutierrez called an inefficient use of valuable law enforcement time. The law requires police to ask people about their immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion they’re in the country illegally.

Gutierrez, a former Kellogg Company CEO who served under President George W. Bush, also supports a long-term path to legalization for immigrants who are in the United States illegally.

Fiorina declined to take a position on legalization. She says the country first needs to secure its borders.
