Congresswoman balances son’s troubles, campaign
DETROIT — U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick of Detroit is waging another re-election campaign while her son, Detroit’s former mayor, faces big legal trouble.
Already jailed for a probation violation, Kwame Kilpatrick was indicted this week on federal fraud and tax charges.
His problems could make his mother vulnerable in the Aug. 3 Democratic primary in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District.
The seven-term congresswoman already faced a tough primary challenge two years ago after racy text messages revealed her son’s marital infidelities and led to perjury and misconduct charges.
Observers say Cheeks Kilpatrick could have another tight race this year. But they also note she has a reputation as a strong incumbent and a large campaign finance advantage.
