Former dictator’s party ahead in Suriname election
PARAMARIBO, Suriname — The political party of former dictator Desi Bouterse appears headed for victory in Suriname’s election.
Preliminary results indicate his Mega Combination coalition has won 23 of the 51 seats in the South American country’s parliament.
The president in Suriname is chosen by a two-thirds vote in parliament. Since no coalition has such a large advantage, the parties will begin negotiations to choose a new leader and Cabinet.
Bouterse engineered a political comeback despite facing trial for the executions of 15 opponents during his leftist military regime in the 1980s. He built a following primarily among young and poor people with populist promises for more jobs and affordable housing.
He has not said whether he will seek the presidency.
