Germany prepares legislation for Greek aid package

BERLIN — Government officials say Germany is starting to lay the legal ground for its contribution to the financial aid package for debt-laden Greece.

A spokeswoman for the Finance Ministry said on Monday minister Wolfgang Schaeuble and leading lawmakers from all parties were to meet in the morning to discuss how to proceed with the necessary legislation.

The government is seeking a speedy parliamentary approval for the controversial loan guarantees for Greece, adding up to some €8 billion ($10.7 billion) for Germany.

Greece said Friday it would ask for a joint euro zone-International Monetary Fund financial rescue package worth some $50 billion — a move that has the German public concerned that their tax money is used to bail out another country.
