MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- The 2010 Municipal elections for Navi Mumbai Corporation took place on Sunday and the election was more or less peaceful as media entities have reported. The voter turnaround was more than 56% and only one incident of rioting was reported. The Navi Mumbai police later said that 25 NCP and Congress supporters were taken into custody for clashing. D. T. Shinde, the Deputy Commissioner of police said that the police picketing around the polling booths was adequate and this prevented any major mishap yesterday. Police detained two people for taking their cell phones inside polling booths.

Dadasaheb Chabukswar, the Election officer said that in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation election 2010, the voter turnaround was initially lower than 50% but it picked up in the afternoon. The outcome of this election is quite crucial for the top political parties. The results are about to be out in a few hours. The NCP and Congress did not contest the Municipal polls jointly. However, the alliance between BJP and Shiv Sena is intact. NCP ruled out an alliance with Congress and said that it can win on its own. Suresh Haware of BJP said that NCP may tumble owing to its overconfidence. He also said that Sena-BJP alliance will prove to be fruitful for both.

The results of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation election 2010 are eagerly awaited. The election was not without instances of political parties mudslinging against one another though. A poll code violation complaint was filed against CM Ashok Chavan as he allegedly gave a provoking speech at Nerul.
