Health agencies remain concerned over bisphenol-A
NEW YORK — Federal health agencies say ongoing research continues to cause concern over the chemical bisphenol-A’s potential effect on children, but there is not enough information to make regulatory changes.
The agencies plan to continue research and will set up a system making it easier to quickly make any regulatory changes on the chemical’s status.
Bisphenol-A, or BPA, is a plastic-hardening chemical found in water bottles, canned food lining and hundreds of other household items. The FDA ruled last year trace amounts that leach out of bottles and food packaging are not dangerous. FDA officials then said they would revisit that conclusion after scientific experts complained it relied on a small number of industry-sponsored studies.
