KATHMANDU - In a surprise move, Nepal’s Maoist chief Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda withdrew from the prime ministerial poll Thursday, after striking a last-minute poll alliance with the ruling communists.

Prachanda’s withdrawal paves the way for communist candidate Jhalanath Khanal to become the new prime minister after 16 rounds of fruitless voting.
