CAIRO - Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has said he will not seek another term in office, broadcaster al-Arabiya reported Wednesday.

Saleh, aged 64, has ruled since 1978 - first in North Yemen and since the end of the Cold War in the united Gulf country.

The Yemeni leader’s announcement, which also said he would not seek to have his son follow him in office, came just hours after President Hosny Mubarak of Egypt also said he would not seek reelection.

Large demonstrations were planned in Sanaa later in the day, opposing Saleh. It was earlier reported that the president had called for an emergency parliamentary meeting Wednesday ahead of the “day of rage” protests.
