Congress-led Kerala opposition launches election march

KASARGOD - The Congress-led opposition in Kerala Monday evening kicked off the campaign for assembly elections later this year by launching a statewide march from Upala near here.
Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy of the Congress led the road campaign, named as “Kerala Mochana Yatra”. He would reach state capital Thiruvananthapuram Feb 4.
The notification for the assembly polls is expected by the end of the next month or early March as the term of the present Left government headed by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan comes to an end in May.
Flagging off the march, state Congress president Ramesh Chennithala said by the time this road campaign reaches the state capital it would have sounded the death knell of the Achuthanandan government.
“The present Left government has proved itself to be the worst ever. The people in the state showed their response to the government by voting against them in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls,” said Chennithala.
In the following assembly by-elections and the recent local agencies’ polls, the Left suffered one of its worst electoral reverses, he said.
The opposition’s march would pass through all the 140 assembly constituencies of the state and Chandy would be accompanied by the top leaders of all the allies of the Congress-led United Democratic Front.
Chandy told IANS that besides highlighting the poor governance of the Left government, they have prepared a “charge sheet” against it and would collect signatures from one crore people during the march.
