KOLKATA - West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Friday praised Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying his integrity was beyond doubt but unscrupulous elements were looting the system.
“I personally believe that the PM is an honest man, I have no doubt about his integrity. But unfortunately some unscrupulous politicians, corporates, bureaucrats and power brokers have looted huge amount of money,” said Bhattacharjee at the Industrial Trade Fair in Kolkata.
The opposition has been attacking the Congress-led UPA-2 over scams - the Adarsh Housing Society scam in Mumbai, the Commonwealth Games scandal and the irregularities in the award of 2G spectrum.
The Left parties and the Bharatiya Janata Party were united in demanding a joint parliamentary probe into the 2G spectrum scam, leading to washout of the winter session of parliament.
Bhattacharjee also said one of major hindrances to India’s economic growth is corruption.
“India is an emerging economy and I have no doubt that our entrepreneurs, engineers and scientists have the ability to take India forward. But we have our share of problems, corruption being one of them,” he said.
